Age calculator

Enter a date of birth to get the age in completed years, months and days on today’s date, or on any date you put in “Age on”. The result also gives the total months, weeks and days lived, the weekday you were born and how many days remain until the next birthday.

Today unless you pick another date.

How an age is counted

Age, in the sense used on passports, school forms and most laws, is the number of birthdays a person has completed. You turn 18 on your eighteenth birthday, not at some point during the year you were born plus 18. The calculator follows that rule and then breaks the remainder down further:

  1. Years: the number of birthdays that have passed on or before the “Age on” date.
  2. Months: the monthly anniversaries since the last birthday. Someone born on the 20th gains a month on the 20th of each month.
  3. Days: the days since the last monthly anniversary.

When a monthly anniversary falls on a day the month does not have, the last day of that month stands in. A person born on January 31 completes a month on February 28 (or 29), on March 31, on April 30 and so on.

The totals work differently. Total days is the plain count of days from the birth date to the “Age on” date. Total weeks is that count divided by 7, rounded down to whole weeks. Total months is years × 12 plus the extra months, so it only grows on monthly anniversaries.

The formula

years = birthdays completed on or before the “Age on” datemonths = monthly anniversaries since the last birthdaydays = days since the last monthly anniversarytotal weeks = total days ÷ 7, rounded down

The year, month and day figures are exact counts on the Gregorian calendar, not divisions by 365 or 30, so they agree with what a person would count on a wall calendar.

Worked examples

Born Sunday, May 20, 1990; age on October 13, 2026
  1. The 36th birthday was May 20, 2026, and the 37th has not arrived, so 36 years.
  2. Monthly anniversaries since then: June 20, July 20, August 20, September 20, so 4 months.
  3. September 20 to October 13 is 23 days.
  4. Totals: 13,295 days, which is 1,899 whole weeks, and 36 × 12 + 4 = 436 months.
  5. The next birthday is Thursday, May 20, 2027, 219 days after October 13, 2026.
36 years, 4 months, 23 days; next birthday in 219 days
A baby born March 15, 2026; age on October 13, 2026
  1. No birthday yet, so 0 years.
  2. Monthly anniversaries from April 15 to September 15: 6 months.
  3. September 15 to October 13 is 28 days.
  4. The total is 212 days; 212 ÷ 7 = 30 weeks with 2 days left over.
6 months, 28 days (212 days, or 30 whole weeks)
Born February 29, 2004; age on February 27 and February 28, 2026
  1. 2026 is not a leap year, so the calculator places the birthday on February 28, 2026.
  2. On February 27 the 22nd birthday is one day away: 21 years, 11 months, 29 days.
  3. On February 28 the birthday is reached, and the age shows 22 years, 0 months, 0 days.
  4. In the leap year 2028 the birthday is back on February 29; on February 28, 2028 the age is 23 years, 11 months, 30 days, one day short of 24.
21 years, 11 months, 29 days on the 27th; 22 years on the 28th

Birthdays on February 29

A leap day falls only in years divisible by 4, skipping century years not divisible by 400, so someone born on February 29 has a true birthday in roughly one year in four.

February 2026MonTueWedThuFriSatSun12345678910111213141516171819202122232425262728
February 2026 has no 29th, so the calculator treats February 28 as the birthday of anyone born on February 29

In common years this calculator moves the birthday back to February 28, the last day of the birth month. That is one of two common conventions. Some legal systems instead say a person born on February 29 reaches a new age on March 1 in common years. If an exact date matters for a legal age, such as a driving license or a pension, check the rule in your own country.

Age counted in other ways

Not every tradition counts age by completed birthdays. In South Korea, the traditional “Korean age” treated a baby as one year old at birth and added a year to everyone on January 1. On June 28, 2023, South Korea made the international full-age count, the one this calculator uses, the standard for legal and administrative purposes, with some exceptions such as school entry and the military draft. This calculator does not produce Korean age.

Mistakes people make with ages

  • Subtracting the birth year from the current year. 2026 − 1990 = 36 gives the age the person reaches during 2026. Before the birthday it is one too many.
  • Turning total days into months by dividing by 30. 13,295 ÷ 30 is about 443, but the person has completed only 436 months. Calendar months are longer than 30 days on average.
  • Leaving “Age on” set to today. For an eligibility cutoff, such as a minimum age on the first day of a school year or on an application deadline, set “Age on” to that date.
  • Trusting the birth weekday for historical dates. Weekdays are worked out on the Gregorian calendar. For anyone born before their country adopted it (Britain switched in 1752), the weekday shown will not match records of the time.

The calculator works with dates only, not times of birth. A person born late in the evening is counted as having the birth date on their certificate, whatever time zone they are in now.

Questions people ask

How many days old am I?

Read the total days figure. For a birth date of May 20, 1990, it is 13,295 days on October 13, 2026.

Why does the next birthday show 0 days?

The “Age on” date is the birthday itself, so the countdown is at zero and the age has just gone up by one year.
